That something that has been going on

A warm welcome to everyone, to the harbor, and to the live TF2 world. For the latter, this article will take it from the basics at the end, explaining who we are and what we do. But first, we have to clarify something that has been going on.

In January this year, the mention of a potential TF2C tournament was made in TF2C Competitive Discord server by the official resources, i.e. us.
In the following weeks, we heard back details about our own creation-in-progress, from a variety of members of the community. Some distorted by the game of gossip, some surprisingly accurate. It would not be wise to expect something less from the community of a leak-based game anyway.

Therefore, it is no secret to the close follower that something potentially big has been going on. Let us confirm it for the distant follower as well: Yes, something has been going on. And it is big.

So far, the preparation process of this thing has been a roller coaster. The idea had appeared, and the initial work was laid down before the Double Down update. A few weeks later, on January 21st, Eminoma released the update, and our project started to ride its momentum. On February 18th, it was Valve’s turn to push a perfectly timed new SDK release that appeared out of nowhere after years of silence. The consequent move from Eminoma was to announce a Steam release for TF2 Classic. Initially, this one has been controversial, having both good and bad implications for us. Not only did we lose resources to various fronts, but we would also have to manage something bigger than initially estimated, in terms of expectations and interest. Moreover, we pushed our schedule all the way after the planned Steam release, so, it is not happening before that. In the grand scheme of things, however, we gained more than we could ask for.

With the Steam release, TF2 Classic, and its competitive gameplay, can technically inherit everything live TF2 has, and even more. This means tournament mode GUI, finally (and hopefully with the initial release); configs with live TF2 cvars working the same if not better; live TF2 server plugins working in TF2C servers without extra effort… On top of these, there is the inevitable growth of our community thanks to being downloaded and run from the biggest online store for video games.

All in all, although with delay, both TF2 Classic competitive and TF2 Classic itself are coming much stronger. We are looking forward to sharing more details in the future.

A letter from the harbor to the world

Let us now address the potential TF2 Classic players of the future.

TF2C is a mod of TF2. Fully released in 2020 (v2.0.0), it has been the exclusive way a whole community plays Team Fortress for the past several years. It receives major and minor updates: It has a developer team behind that listens to community’s feedback, and approaches their creation with care. It has full servers any time of the day. It is a strong candidate of becoming your next favorite thing, especially when it comes to casual play. Steam release will make things slightly easier, but even now, it is only a few clicks away. We strongly advice you to try it out now, if you have not yet.

CompTF2C (a.k.a. TF2C Competitive) is a community initiative to have a platform to play TF2C competitively. It is built upon the demand of periodic PUG organizations, related player base, the servers to support that, and the maintenance and development of those servers. As stated above, CompTF2C is currently not limiting itself with PUGs, and is aiming to go big. To keep being updated, and to hop on the wagon starting from now, there is no better way than joining the Discord server, and participating in the games.

Hoping to see you there.
