PuG Ladder Spring 2025: Awards and Statistics

May 8, 2025

The first ever competitive TF2 Classic event, CompTF2C’s PuG Ladder Spring 2025 is over. As TF2 Classic brings the early TF2 features and spirit back, CompTF2C brought the word “ladder” back to competitive TF2 after a decade. Due to known limitations, it was simplistic. It had to use PuG teams as its evaluation criteria. But it helped build something up in 8 weeks time, and painted a picture of ourselves to look back at.

81 unique players attended the PuGs, from 4 major TF2 regions as far as it is known to us. 35 pick-up games are played in total. Points are given to the players in the winning teams. Here is a thorough look into our winners, heroes, favourite maps, game modes, and the future of CompTF2C.

Player Awards

f became the Winner of Spring 2025 season, who was granted the task of Demolition more often than not. Geemo became the second, who has earned equal number of points in more matches, and was often seen playing the Pyromaniac. It is a nice coincidence that the third place holder bub is from yet another major region. His unstoppable Scout plays deserve an award themselves.

The 4th place holder Core2Duo has played Medic 8 times to earn the Community’s Medic Award. сирёжа (seryouzha) and sandwich followed him behind to claim their titles as the doctors of our community.

Maps, modes, more statistics

Our longtime favourite live TF2 modes were played the most: KOTH and 5CP. koth_product has the lead by far, due to almost being a monopoly in the 4v4 games played. Payload was played twice as well, and that concludes the common TF2C-live TF2 modes.

From the TF2C-unique modes, VIP was played 3 times. VIPR (VIP Race) and TD (Territorial Domination) each have 2 appearances. Unfortunately DOM (Domination) never made it to the PuGs since we started the ladder. This drought in TF2C-unique mode appearances is due to them requiring more players to contest these maps, which are either big, or have multiple control points to capture at the same time. More players in the future will mean more appearances of these modes.

More participation meant more chance to win and gain points in the ladder. We always appreciate more participation, as we discussed thoroughly in our previous article. In this sense, special thanks go to Geemo, who, with 25 matches, participated more than anyone. The average of all participants in this measure is slightly below 5. If we look at the win ratios (wins per played) of players with equal to or more than 5 matches: Jaws, Gibusmain, ruad and Damon are at the top of the table. We hope they stick around more next time, and show us that they can maintain that high ratio which gets more difficult as you play more. Although, anyone who played against Damon probably learnt that he would get the Spy of the season award, if there was one.

We try to look at yet another measure (called “Points+”) which is the sum of maximum 70 points given for the win ratio (for example, 35 points for 50% win ratio), and maximum 30 points given for 25 matches played (for example, 6 points for having played 5 matches). In this hybrid evaluation system, Duckle also shows himself behind the lead f, and in front of Geemo.

The journey and the next stop

The 8 week journey that started in March has witnessed various developments in CompTF2C. In the first 2 weeks, the momentum added by the release of Double Down could still be felt. Plugins were still being made, and competitive configs were being written on our side, in the leadership of Jaws. The stopwatch plugin of gwonam has appeared in Week 2’s NA PuG played on Upward, and opened up the doors for more possibilities, such as VIP. After the relatively dry Weeks 3 and 4; the joint event with TF2C Mapping Community was announced for Week 5. The custom maps vipr_chopper from Damon, and koth_graphite from The 9th heavy were played in a week that aroused a lot of interest. Our website went online right after that, and sage introduced the pugBot to our Discord. In Week 6, VIP was played for the first time, on the Harbor. In Week 7 we welcomed a lot of newcomers from the live TF2 community. Thanks to our PuG runners elektro and Duckle, NA PuGs were finally played at a proper time in Week 7. We announced the final week after that, and played it together with menex and blanc, the European masters from ANTICIDE.

The ladder is over, but the PuGs are most definitely not. We will keep playing like we always do, gathering in our Discord server. Moreover, CompTF2C is currently in talks for not only one, but two collaborations. One comes from a familiar place (see the image above). The source of the other one is more distantly related, but there is no question that they are motivated folk. This so-called collaboration’s nature is not concrete yet. It might also be an event where CompTF2C supports from the outside with its accumulated know-how, which, we would gladly do to see another platform support competitive TF2 Classic.
