TFNews: Classic Revival Week

TFC visiting FF visiting PF2 visiting TFC visiting PF2 visiting FF visiting TFC in return.

Three Fortress titles making up one of the closest related kinship within the realm of Fortress games are visiting, and being visited by, each others’ communities on three game nights over a week’s duration, in the 30th year of the Team Fortress saga. This is as much of a collaboration to amplify the fun as it is a competition to prove their mastery over the others. How well a Team Fortress Classicer performs in Source engine? What about the Fortress Forever folk in GoldSrc? Can the usual Pre-Fortress 2 enjoyer pull off bunny hopping? All of this and more will be answered during the Classic Revival Week!

Supported by the recent efforts of talented mappers and server gurus like chuck43, maxine, and DarthMan, the common old time favorites like Avanti and Dustbowl will be in rotation across all three communities, either directly ported from one of the games to another, or entirely remade by respective community members. You can enjoy your most beloved playgrounds with different mechanics and cannot blame being totally owned on the disadvantage of layout knowledge.
The PF2 server FortressWorld, co-hosted by maxine and chuck43, is running a set of “TFC plugins” in addition to PF2’s native server configuration, that alters default features like grenade holstering, making the gameplay as close as possible to TFC/QWTF.

Some of your favorite Fortressmen will accompany you in the game nights, like Azzy, one of the main programmers for FF and TF2 Classified, and Phil from the TF PUGS community of North American competitive TFC. The community lead of FF, BrokenBenny, PF2 development team’s Farlander and Colby, and Spanky of Royston Vasey will be there too, without whose contributions this could not have been done.

What is Team Fortress Classic? What is Royston Vasey?
TFC is the first commercial Fortress game, whose creation is led by Quake Team Fortress’ modder Robin Walker himself, built on Valve’s GoldSrc engine, released in 1999. Royston Vasey is a UK-based TFC server and community that has existed for about two decades now that still plays the game passionately and consistently every Saturday night. Unlike FF and PF2, the TFC collaborator in Classic Revival Week is not the game’s official developer (Valve) itself, as one might imagine, but the Royston Vasey community.

An up-to-date Steam version of TFC is sufficient to join the TFC night in the Royston Vasey server, which is hosted by their long time member Jo Leeene in its current era.

What is Fortress Forever?
Impatient of waiting on Valve for the next Team Fortress installment, the Fortress lovers developed their fan-made sequel in the Source engine, FF, and released it only a few days before the release of Team Fortress 2. Making use of modernized models and HUD to fix legacy problems while keeping the highly desired TFC-like mechanics, FF has always had a special place in the hearts of many Fortressmen of other domains.

The latest version of FF is free to download and run directly on Steam.

What is Pre-Fortress 2?
Pre-Fortress 2 is a Source Mod for Source Engine 2013 that brings back elements of previous Team Fortress installments such as grenades, armor, maps, and gamemodes. PF2 intends to bridge the gap between QWTF/TFC and TF2, including console commands that emulate classic staples, such as bunny hopping and grenade holstering, in addition to taking a best-of-both-worlds approach towards implementing legacy elements while keeping true to Valve’s visual design, gameplay balance, and player readability.

Pending its own official Steam release, the most current publicly playable version of PF2 is available to download here.
